A YouTube link can be valid but not clickable in the place you put it. Ordinary URLs in Shorts descriptions and comments are non-clickable. Long-form descriptions support external links with advanced feature access. Start by identifying the placement, then check permissions and the destination. YouTube's link-location overview is the primary reference.
This is a documentation-based guide checked on September 20, 2026. We did not run a current desktop or mobile viewer test for this article. The diagram is explanatory; the checks below are a workflow for your own channel.
Which YouTube link locations are clickable?
| Placement | What to expect | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Long-form description or comment | External URLs can be clickable with advanced feature access. | Check feature eligibility and the published viewer page. |
| Ordinary URL in a Shorts description or comment | Non-clickable, including a URL in a pinned comment. | Choose an appropriate supported entry point. |
| Channel profile link | A dedicated clickable link field. | Set a clear title and correct website address. |
| Related video on a Short | A clickable route to content on your YouTube channel. | Select a suitable video; it is not a website URL field. |
| External brand deal link on a Short | A separate commercial feature. | Follow the reported partnership and link workflow below. |
The ordinary-placement distinctions come from YouTube's current link-location rules. Do not apply a long-form tutorial to a Shorts description merely because both screens contain a description box.
Check the channel's feature access
On a computer, open YouTube Studio → Settings → Channel → Feature eligibility. Check the displayed status for advanced features. Phone verification and advanced access are different levels; do not assume completing the first unlocked everything. YouTube describes channel history and, where available, identity or video verification as routes to advanced access in its feature-access guide.
Check the channel you are actually editing, especially if your account manages several. Record the status before changing the URL. If the required access is unavailable, repeatedly shortening or reformatting the same address will not grant it.
Choose the right route from a Short
Send viewers to another video
YouTube's related-video instructions describe selecting a Short in Studio's Content section, choosing a related video from your channel and saving. The target must be public or unlisted and follow the platform's guidelines. The viewer link appears below the channel handle.
The official eligibility pages currently disagree. The related-video guide says advanced access is required, while the feature-access table also marks this feature under phone verification. Check whether the control is available in your own Studio instead of treating either page as a guarantee for every channel. We have not resolved that discrepancy through an account test.
For a video walkthrough of that placement, watch Creator Insider: How to Grow Long-form with YouTube Shorts. The English segment at 0:43–1:11 explains the related-video link and Studio selection steps. It covers routing viewers to your channel content; it is not an external-website link workaround. Check the feature controls available to your channel.
For example, a short repair tip could point to your full repair demonstration. Tell the viewer which video the related link opens. This is an editorial example, not a tested claim about click-through rates.
Send viewers to a website through your profile
Use the dedicated profile Links section rather than relying on text in a channel description. On desktop, YouTube documents Studio → Customization → Profile → Links, then adding a title and URL and publishing. You can list up to 14 links; the first has prominent placement and the others are available through more links. See the channel profile instructions.
Give the intended action a specific label, such as “Workshop booking” or “Download the checklist.” A spoken invitation to visit your profile should use that same label, so viewers can recognize the destination without guessing.
Understand the commercial exception
It would be wrong to say Shorts can never contain an external clickable link. YouTube's external brand deal link documentation describes a partner or authorized agency reporting both the partnership and link, followed by creator acceptance. The placement can be the player, description or both, and links undergo safety checks. This is separate from pasting an ordinary URL and is not an automatic option for every Short.
Separate a missing click target from a broken destination
| Symptom | Useful check | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| The URL is plain text | Confirm the video format, placement and required feature access. | That the website or short-link service is down. |
| The published link is missing | Reopen the saved settings and check any platform notice. | That another URL format will bypass the cause. |
| A link opens an error or wrong page | Compare the saved URL, redirect destination and final page. | That the original placement was non-clickable. |
| It behaves differently on a phone | Record app/browser, version, sign-in state and the exact entry point. | That all mobile viewers see the same result. |
Use a complete address beginning with https:// as a troubleshooting baseline. Check for missing characters, spaces or punctuation accidentally copied into the URL. This removes ambiguity from your test; it does not override placement rules.
If YouTube removed a link or shows a restriction, inspect the notice and destination. Its external-links policy applies beyond clickable links and permits removal when a link cannot be verified as safe. A redirect is not a way to make a prohibited destination acceptable.
Test the path a viewer actually takes
- Write down the starting point. Record the video or channel URL, the placement and the destination you intend. Keep Studio settings separate from viewer observations.
- Open the destination directly. Use a page you own or are authorized to share. Confirm its content and any intended sign-in requirement before adding a redirect.
- Check the exact saved link. If it is a short URL, open that too and compare the final page. Check both the host and the page content; a successful load of the wrong workshop or product is still a failure.
- Open the published viewer surface. On desktop and in the mobile experience your audience uses, locate the actual link and activate it. Do not count selecting text or copying an address as a successful clickable link.
- Record access conditions. Note the date, browser or app version and whether you were signed in. Where appropriate, repeat in a signed-out browser to distinguish your creator access from public access.
- Confirm the intended next action. Check that the form, download or product information is available. Avoid real purchases, submissions or other side effects merely to prove a link works.
Keep a short record with columns for placement, device, sign-in state, clickable or not, final URL and observed result. Leave untested combinations marked “not tested.” One successful desktop check does not establish the mobile app result.
What a short link can help with
A 302.sh link can provide a maintained destination and a report of recorded requests when used in a supported placement. It cannot enable YouTube features, turn disabled text into a click target or guarantee platform acceptance. After editing a destination, repeat the viewer-path check.
Use separate links or campaign labels when comparing placements. The UTM URL builder guide explains campaign tagging; tags do not install analytics or grant access to another website's reports. A short-link request is also not proof of a distinct viewer or completed sale. Our link visits versus GA4 sessions guide explains the counting difference.
If you distribute the same destination on Instagram, check its own supported placements using the Instagram short-link guide. Reusing a URL does not make the two platforms' controls identical.
Common questions
Will a shorter address make my Shorts comment clickable?
No. Changing the address length does not change that placement's behavior. Choose a supported entry point that matches where you want viewers to go.
Can I use the related-video field for my shop?
That field selects content from your YouTube channel. For a website, use a supported external-link placement and verify its access requirements.
Does a working link mean viewers completed the action?
No. A working route establishes access. Completed bookings, purchases or downloads need evidence from the system responsible for that action.
What is included in 302.sh?
Free allows 5 new links per UTC month and up to 50 owned links, with 5 custom slugs per month of at least 6 characters. Deleting a link does not refund its monthly creation allowance.
Free includes 2,000 analytics events per month and 90-day retention. Reaching that analytics allowance stops additional tracking, not redirects. Link deletion, owner-set limits and safety enforcement can still stop redirects. Branded domains require a paid plan and completed domain setup. See current plans and limits.
