How to Create a WhatsApp Short Link and Track Clicks

Build and test a native wa.me link, add optional prefilled text, and learn when an editable short link, QR code or separate click report helps.

A WhatsApp link opens a draft, not a sent messageA short link points to wa.me, which opens an illustrative chat with a prefilled message. The send button is separate: the visitor still needs to send the message. This is a conceptual drawing, not a WhatsApp screenshot.Short linkwa.me/…+ optional messageWhatsAppDraft readyI'm interestedVisitor chooses Send
A short link opens WhatsApp through wa.me. Prefilled text remains a draft until the visitor chooses Send.

WhatsApp's free Click to Chat link is the simplest way to open a conversation without asking someone to save a phone number first. Use https://wa.me/<number>, with the complete international number and no plus sign, spaces, brackets or dashes. Add a managed short link only when you need a readable public alias, separate click reports, a QR code, or an address whose destination can be updated later.

A click can open WhatsApp with the intended conversation. It cannot prove that the visitor sent a message, became a lead or made a purchase.

Create the native WhatsApp link

WhatsApp's official Click to Chat instructions specify this format:

https://wa.me/<international-number>
  1. Write the complete phone number in international format.
  2. Use the country code and the number in its correct international format. Omit a national trunk prefix only where the numbering rules require it; keep valid zeros in the number. Remove the plus sign, spaces, brackets and dashes.
  3. Append the digits to https://wa.me/.
  4. Test the URL on a phone and in a desktop browser. It should open an available WhatsApp app or web handoff for the intended account.

Replace the placeholder, including its angle brackets, with the complete international digits of a WhatsApp number you are authorized to share. The destination number remains visible after the redirect; a short link does not hide it.

Optionally add a prefilled message

WhatsApp also documents a text query parameter. URL-encode the message so spaces and punctuation survive:

https://wa.me/<international-number>?text=I%27m%20interested%20in%20the%20workshop

The visitor still chooses whether to send the message. Keep the text clear and expected; do not put secrets, account identifiers or sensitive information in the URL because URLs can be copied, logged and shared.

If the person should choose a contact first, WhatsApp also documents https://wa.me/?text=.... A shortener is unnecessary when the native link already meets your needs.

Native link or managed short link?

NeedSuggested approach
Open one WhatsApp conversationUse the native wa.me URL.
Add an expected draft messageUse WhatsApp's encoded text parameter.
Share a readable alias or download a QR codePoint a 302.sh link at the tested wa.me destination.
Compare a website button with a printed cardUse a separate short link for each entrance.
Count sent messages or salesShort-link click analytics cannot provide this.

Create a WhatsApp short link in 302.sh

  1. Create and test the native wa.me URL first, including any prefilled text.
  2. Open New link and paste the complete HTTPS URL as the destination.
  3. Choose an available alias such as chat-studio. New links use 3go.to by default; a verified branded domain is a paid option.
  4. Save and open the copied short URL on phone and desktop. Verify the account and draft text before distributing it.
  5. Download the QR code from the link's detail page if you need a printed entrance.

The alias is illustrative, not an active demo. A 302.sh short link adds a redirect before WhatsApp. That extra dependency is useful only when its management and reporting solve a real problem.

Track entrances without claiming message conversions

For example, use chat-site for a website button and chat-card for a printed card, both pointing to the same tested WhatsApp destination. Their separate click reports can distinguish recorded entrances.

A click may stop at a browser handoff, WhatsApp Web login, account error or unsent draft. Preview fetches, repeat visits, test opens and filtering may affect counts. Do not label short-link clicks as conversations, qualified leads or sales.

Use WhatsApp's own business and messaging tools, plus your consented customer process, to evaluate what happens after the handoff. Do not expose a personal number merely to improve a click report.

Change the phone number without reprinting the short URL

If the authorized WhatsApp number changes, build and test a new native URL, then edit the short link's destination. Keep the public domain and slug unchanged. Test the original shared URL and printed QR code after saving.

Changing the short-link slug changes its address and the old slug stops resolving. Read how to rename a link safely. A redirect cannot keep a deactivated WhatsApp account working, and it cannot bypass WhatsApp availability, login or device requirements.

Troubleshooting checklist

Using the link in a QR code

Generate the QR code from the final short URL if its click report and editable target are required. If you encode the native wa.me URL directly, the scan bypasses 302.sh. Print a human-readable contact instruction and test a physical proof before distribution.

For a related feedback workflow, see Google review QR codes. The measurement boundary is the same: the redirect records a click, while the destination platform owns the final action.

What is included in 302.sh?

Free allows 5 new links per UTC month and up to 50 owned links, with 5 custom slugs per month of at least 6 characters. Deleting a link does not refund its monthly creation allowance.

Free includes 2,000 analytics events per month and 90-day retention. Reaching that analytics allowance stops additional tracking, not redirects. Link deletion, owner-set limits and safety enforcement can still stop redirects. Branded domains require a paid plan and completed domain setup. See current plans and limits.
